Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the removal of application fees for scholarships and bursaries offered through the Lagos State Scholarship Board (LSSB), marking a significant step toward improving access to education.
The announcement was made yesterday by the Secretary of the LSSB, Mr. AbdurRahman Lekki, in a statement explaining that the move aligns with the administration’s broader initiative to promote youth empowerment and social inclusion.
Lekki highlighted that eliminating the application fees directly addresses the concerns raised by stakeholders, especially those advocating for improved educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged students.
“This decision underscores Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to ensuring that every student, regardless of financial background, can benefit from the educational opportunities provided by the state,” Lekki said.
In explaining the financial implications, Lekki mentioned that the revenue generated from the application fees represented just 0.5 per cent of the agency’s total budget, further justifying the decision to abolish them.
He emphasized that the focus should remain on expanding access rather than generating revenue from these applications.
He continued, “Governor Sanwo-Olu’s decision not only demonstrates a commitment to equitable education but also reinforces Lagos State’s reputation as a government that supports youth and their aspirations.”
