President Bola Tinubu has appointed Vice President Kashim Shettima to spearhead Nigeria’s delegation at the upcoming 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The announcement was made by Mr. Shettima’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
According to Mr. Nkwocha, Vice President Shettima will join King Charles of England and various leaders from the 56 member countries at the CHOGM, which is set to take place in the Pacific island nation of Apia, Samoa, from October 21 to 26.
The theme of this year’s event, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,” will focus on how member nations can leverage their strengths through resilience, unlock potential, capitalize on the ‘Commonwealth Advantage,’ and promote a connected, digital Commonwealth.
Additionally, Nigeria and other member countries will have the opportunity to elect and appoint the next Commonwealth Secretary-General.
“In accordance with the revised 2022 memorandum regarding the establishment and functions of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the next Secretary-General will be from the African region,” Mr. Nkwocha noted. Candidates for the position include representatives from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia, with Nigeria poised to play a significant role as the largest African member state.
Furthermore, Mr. Nkwocha indicated that Mr. Shettima and fellow world leaders will discuss critical issues, including the global economy, environmental concerns, and security challenges.
“The leaders will also explore collaborative efforts among Commonwealth countries to enhance resilience, stimulate trade and innovation, and empower the Commonwealth’s 1.5 billion young people toward a more peaceful and sustainable future,” he added.
Additionally, Mr. Shettima intends to leverage the Commonwealth Business Forum as a platform to attract more investors to Nigeria. The forum will bring together global business leaders and private sector experts to propose solutions to pressing global challenges.
Lastly, Mr. Nkwocha highlighted that the Vice President would participate in the People’s Forum, the largest opportunity organized by the Commonwealth Foundation for citizens to engage with leaders on global development issues. He will also engage in bilateral discussions and other executive sessions during the summit.
