The Presidency has categorically refuted claims circulating online that security personnel were deployed to prevent Senators from executing their legislative duties, particularly concerning an alleged move to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by Senator Basheer Lado, the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), the reports were labeled as “baseless,” urging the public to disregard such misinformation.

He clarified that there was no discord within the Senate, and stressed that the unity of the National Assembly remains intact, as senators remain committed to advancing the nation’s democracy.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in line with his dedication to a harmonious working relationship among the senators, recognizes the critical role of the senate in driving legislative progress,” Lado said.

He further added, “His Excellency remains committed to ensuring that this collaboration is based on mutual respect, dialogue, and shared goals for peace, progress, and prosperity of all Nigerians.”

Addressing the concerns regarding the security presence at the National Assembly Complex, Lado explained that it was routine and solely intended to ensure the safety and protection of legislators and parliamentary staff.

The Presidency called on the public to dismiss the misleading reports, warning that such rumors could damage the integrity of the nation’s legislative process.

It should be recalled that during Wednesday’s plenary, Senate President Akpabio personally debunked the impeachment rumors, calling the viral reports a “mischief” and “fake news.”

He ordered an investigation into the origin and promoters of the misinformation, reaffirming his position and the continued stability within the Senate.
