The Yobe State Police Command has issued a strong warning to residents about fraudulent virtual meetings orchestrated by cybercriminals.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, released a statement on Tuesday in Damaturu, alerting the public to the growing threat posed by these scams.
“The hackers create fake online meetings and send a link to their victims,” Mr. Abdulkarim explained. “Once you click on the link, your bank accounts and other security information become compromised.”
According to the police, these fraudsters often masquerade as bank officials, claiming they are assisting with account upgrades. They send a one-time password (OTP) code to their target’s phone or social media handle and request the code under the pretense of registration or verification.
“By sending them the OTP, victims are essentially giving the fraudsters direct access to their accounts, allowing them to withdraw funds within minutes,” Abdulkarim noted.
Residents are urged to be highly cautious, especially regarding disclosing sensitive financial details. Abdulkarim advised the public to verify such communications through direct contact with their banks.
“Never send OTP codes or sensitive information to unverified sources. Be cautious of online meetings or account updates,” he added.
He also emphasized the importance of regularly monitoring personal bank accounts and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.
Furthermore, the Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, has issued a stern warning to the syndicate responsible for these fraudulent acts, urging them to desist or face severe legal consequences.
