Operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command have arrested a pregnant woman suspected of stealing a baby during a naming ceremony in Keffi.

The arrest, which occurred on Thursday, September 28, 2024, was confirmed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, in a statement released on Sunday.

According to Mr. Nansel, the suspect, identified as Khadija Aliyu, attended a naming ceremony in Keffi, claiming to be pregnant. While the event was underway, she allegedly snuck into a house, where a seven-day-old baby girl was sleeping, and stole the child.

The suspect reportedly wrapped the baby in a veil, secured her behind her back, and escaped unnoticed.

Mr. Nansel explained that Aliyu’s arrest came shortly after the theft was discovered. “The suspect, who has been claiming to be pregnant, attended a naming ceremony at Behind INEC office, Keffi.

While the event was ongoing, she sneaked into the house, stole the baby that was laid to sleep, carried the child behind her back, covered her with a veil, and escaped before she was later arrested,” he said.

In a related incident, police also apprehended an ex-convict, Hussaini Mohammed, for allegedly stealing three motorcycles in the same town. Mohammed, who was recently released from a correctional facility, was arrested by officers from the Angwan Lambu Division in Keffi. Police recovered three motorcycles, suspected to have been stolen, during the investigation.

“One Hussaini Mohammed, a resident of Behind Stadium, Keffi, and an ex-convict who left correctional facility a few months ago, was arrested by Police Operatives attached to Angwan Lambu Division, Keffi, for motorcycle theft. During the investigation, three motorcycles suspected to be stolen items were recovered from the suspect as exhibits,” Mr. Nansel stated.

The Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, urged members of the public who have lost motorcycles to visit the Angwan Lambu Division in Keffi with proof of ownership to claim any of the recovered vehicles.

He also reassured the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
