In a decisive political sweep, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won all 260 ward councillorship seats across the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu State during the council elections held on Saturday.
Announcing the results on Monday in Enugu, Prof. Christian Ngwu, Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), confirmed the PDP’s victory in every ward. Ngwu explained that the delay in announcing the councillorship results was due to the commission’s thorough scrutiny process to ensure accuracy.
“The PDP won all 260 ward councillorship positions within the 260 political wards in the state,” Prof. Ngwu said. “The election was duly conducted, and it was most peaceful, fair, free, and credible.”
ENSIEC had already declared on Sunday that the PDP also secured all 17 chairmanship positions across the Local Government Areas. Prof. Ngwu, serving as the returning officer, emphasized the commission’s commitment to transparency, saying, “ENSIEC ensured a level playing field for all 17 political parties that participated in the polls.”
While the full details of the councillorship results will be made public later, the commission plans to issue Certificates of Return to the winners of both the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the near future. Ngwu also highlighted the peaceful nature of the election, stating that there were no reports of violence or disruptions.
“The commission is not aware of any violence or breakdown of law and order during the polls,” Ngwu confirmed.
