In a move aimed at addressing the growing concern of paternity fraud in Nigeria, popular radio host Oriyomi Hamzat has announced a free DNA testing outreach in Ilorin.
The two-week program, which is set to begin soon, will provide an opportunity for individuals to confirm their biological relationships free of charge.
Nigeria has been grappling with a high incidence of paternity fraud, with a 2021 report by The Guardian ranking the country second in the world, behind only Jamaica. According to the report, Nigeria’s paternity fraud rate stands at 30.3%, a statistic that has led to emotional and psychological distress for many families.
It was recently revealed that a leading Lagos-based DNA testing center found that Lagos accounted for the highest percentage of tests, with 82.89% of the total conducted between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. This highlights the growing concern and need for DNA testing in the country.
Oriyomi’s free DNA testing outreach is open to all, and participants will be required to provide a simple cheek swab sample for testing. The results will be confidential and made available to the individuals concerned.
Community leaders and health experts have praised Oriyomi’s efforts, recognizing the initiative as a crucial step towards addressing the broader issues of family relationships and identity in Nigeria.
