As the new Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, settles down into office, an Akure prince, Adewole Daramola, has given him a piece of advice on his choice of deputy governor.

The counsel came barely few days after Ayedatiwa succeeded the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, 67, who died in Germany last Wednesday after battling an alleged cancer and leukemia.

Daramola urged Aiyedatiwa to pick a female deputy governor from Akure, the state capital, to ensure inclusivity, equity, and progressive representation within the state.

“Your Excellency Governor Aiyedatiwa, as you embark on this pivotal journey of leadership, I wish to highlight the profound importance of your selection for the role of the Deputy Governor. The decision carries immense significance not only in terms of governance but also for fostering inclusivity, equity, and progressive representation within the state,” Daramola, who is based in Canada.

He added: “Firstly, the city of Akure stands as the vibrant heart of Ondo State, serving as its capital. However, historically, Akure has not been represented in the gubernatorial leadership of the state. This glaring omission presents an opportune moment to rectify this disparity and uphold the principle of fairness.”

“By selecting a deputy governor from Akure, we can bridge this historical gap and empower the city’s residents to actively contribute to the leadership and governance of their state. Such a decision will resonate deeply, fostering a sense of belonging, unity, and shared responsibility among all regions of Ondo State,” Daramola who is the Baba Oodua of Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) North America further pleaded.

“Secondly, the significance of gender representation in leadership cannot be overstated. It is an undeniable fact that women have continuously proven their mettle in leadership roles across diverse sectors. In other states where female deputy governors have served, their contributions have been invaluable, bringing diverse perspectives and enriching governance,” he emphasized.

He added: “We have a wealth of talented and qualified women eager to serve and contribute to the state’s progress. By appointing a female deputy governor, we not only champion gender equality but also tap into a pool of exceptional talent that has long been underrepresented in leadership positions. This appointment would stand as a beacon of inspiration for young women across the state, encouraging them to aspire to leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to the progress of Ondo State.”

According to him, the selection of a deputy governor from Akure and the consideration of a qualified female candidate are not just policy decisions, but that they are statements that reflect the values, aspirations, and commitment to inclusive and progressive governance in the state.

“They symbolize our dedication to a more representative leadership that harnesses the diverse talents and perspectives within our state for the greater good,” he stressed, adding: “I urge his Excellency the new governor of Ondo State, to consider these crucial factors deeply in the selection process. Your decision holds the power to not only shape the immediate future but to inspire generations to come.”

Daramola maintained: “I pledge my unwavering support to the Governor, standing ready to assist in any way possible. If the need arises, I will be honored to present capable and qualified Akure women who are eager to serve in leadership capacities.”

He expressed his heartfelt empathy and condolence with the people of the state on the loss of Akeredolu, saying that “Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s passing is a profound moment of sorrow for the entire state. His dedication, leadership, and vision have left an indelible mark, and his absence will be deeply felt by many.”

He further stated: “May Governor Akeredolu’s legacy of service and commitment continue to inspire us all. As the state mourns this great loss, I join in solidarity with the people of our beloved Ondo State, offering heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers.

“In this period of transition, I pray for our new Governor, for strength, wisdom, and divine guidance. May he be endowed with the courage to lead, the empathy to understand, and the resilience to navigate through the challenges ahead.”

Daramola also prayed that “may God grant solace to those grieving, fortitude to those carrying the touch of leadership, and unity to the entire state during this time of transition and reflection.”

“Governor Akeredolu’s legacy will endure, and may his spirit continue to guide and inspire the path ahead for Ondo State,” he stated.
