The Ondo State Government has approved a N3.5 billion Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) counterpart fund for the construction and renovation of public primary schools across the state.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Laolu Akindolire, after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure on Friday.

Mr. Akindolire explained that this counterpart funding would unlock an additional N7 billion from UBEC, providing a significant boost to the state’s efforts to revitalize public education.

“Our commitment to improving education in Ondo State remains unwavering”.

“The approval of the N3.5 billion counterpart fund for UBEC at zero interest shows the governor’s dedication to ensuring that schools in the state receive the necessary support for construction and renovation”, he said.

The funds will facilitate the construction of new classrooms and the renovation of existing ones, enhancing the learning environment for primary school students across Ondo State.

Healthcare Improvements and Public Health Precautions

The Ondo State government also provided updates on its ongoing healthcare initiatives. Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Simidele Odimayo, reported that the state was pleased with the low incidence of Lassa fever and the complete absence of cholera and monkeypox cases in September.

Mr. Odimayo urged communities to maintain vigilance and continue taking precautions to uphold public health standards.

He also announced the launch of a nationwide health initiative called “Project 10 Million,” which will run from October 13 to October 19.

The project aims to screen residents for hypertension and diabetes, ensuring early detection and intervention for these chronic conditions.

In further healthcare efforts, the government approved the renovation of primary healthcare facilities in all 203 wards across the state.

These upgrades will include essential infrastructure such as security, fencing, staff accommodation, solar power, and borehole installations to improve service delivery and ensure the facilities are well-equipped.

Shoreline Protection for Aiyetoro and Flood Mitigation Efforts

The Commissioner for Environment, Oyeniyi Oseni, expressed the state government’s concern for the residents of Aiyetoro in Ilaje Local Government Area, who have been affected by recurrent sea incursions.

Mr. Oseni revealed that the government had completed a technical review of the Aiyetoro shoreline protection project and would soon begin implementing both temporary and long-term measures to mitigate further flooding in the area.

“The protection of Aiyetoro’s shoreline is a priority, and we are working to ensure that the community no longer suffers from the destructive effects of sea incursions,” Oseni stated.

Infrastructure Overhaul: Focus on Road Repairs

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information, Wale Akinlosotu, reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges, specifically road repairs.

He noted that Governor Aiyedatiwa had directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to ensure that all major roads across the state are free of potholes by December.

“Fixing the roads is a top priority for the administration, and the governor has tasked the Ministry of Infrastructure to expedite the process,” Akinlosotu said.

The comprehensive plan from the Ondo State government reflects its focus on improving education, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental protection, underscoring its commitment to the well-being and prosperity of its citizens.
