The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has attributed the majority of road crashes in the state to reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance.
According to the South-West zonal commander, Ajibade Adekunle, many drivers operate their vehicles carelessly, putting their own lives and those of other road users at risk.
Adekunle made this statement during a training session for truck drivers at Nustanza Nigeria Limited in Onibuku, Ogun.
He emphasized that drivers must take their responsibilities seriously and respect road safety rules to prevent accidents.
“We have identified reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance as major challenges. This training is aimed at reducing road crashes in the state.
“When vehicles are not maintained, they break down on the highways; on-coming vehicles sometimes ram into such stationary vehicles.
“This can lead to serious crashes, injuries, and sometimes death. We need to turn a new leaf,” he said.
The commander further said poor visibility, drunkenness and speeding are other factors that could cause crashes.
“We are appealing to truck drivers to desist from taking alcohol and other intoxicating substances to avoid mishaps on the roads.
“Truck drivers should cooperate with traffic personnel; they should refrain from aggressive tendencies that endanger the life of road users,” he said.
The training initiative, mandated by TRACE Corps Commander Seni Ogunyemi, aims to educate truck drivers on the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices.
