A student of Obada Grammar School in Ogun State, Monday Ariyo, tragically passed away after allegedly being ordered by a teacher to perform 162 frog jumps and endure 24 strokes of the cane for reportedly breaking a dustbin.

The incident occurred at the Imeko Afon Local Government Area school, sparking public outrage.

The news was shared by activist Adetoun on Instagram, who provided details on Friday about the punishment that allegedly led to Ariyo’s collapse.

According to her, the teacher had initially brought a dustbin into the classroom and instructed students not to damage it. Ariyo, reportedly jokingly, remarked that the dustbin had been bought with students’ money. This response reportedly angered the teacher, who took the matter to the principal.

Following the teacher’s report, the principal directed that Ariyo be punished. Acting on this instruction, the teacher allegedly proceeded with the intense punishment. Adetoun claims that as Ariyo was made to perform 162 frog jumps and was later struck with a cane, he collapsed and fell unconscious.

Adetoun further alleged that there was a delay in seeking medical help for Ariyo, as the teacher and some other staff members hesitated before taking him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola stated, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention and died today (October 25).”

She added that the body has been moved to Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy, with an investigation ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
