The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo, has solicited the support of the British High Commission towards promoting and sustaining international economic cooperation and development for the State and the Southwest region.
Oluomo made the request while playing host to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, represented by the Deputy High Commissioner, Lagos, Harriet Thompson at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
He assured that the Assembly members were ready to collaborate with the Commission on issues of community engagement, security, support for research in areas that would benefit the community and donor agencies.
The Speaker, who on behalf of the State government thanked the Commission for all the necessary supports and development initiatives being rendered to the State and particularly to the entire South West through Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL) and Department for International Development (DFID), implored the Commission to sustain the international engagements with the region.
He noted that the Assembly under his leadership prioritized cross fertilization of ideas, particularly with developed nations, stating that he was committed to ensuring human capacity building to establish operational ties with the Commission to facilitate seamless exposures for exchange programmmes with the British parliament.
Recalling that up till 80s, Nigeria as a member of the Commonwealth Nations, her citizen did not require visa to visit the United Kingdom, while seeking the support of the Commission to enable the legislative arm have direct introduction to the Commission.
Earlier in her remarks, the British Deputy High Commissioner, Lagos, Thompson said that the State had been having robust engagements with the Commission on political and economic issues, assuring that the commission was open to more diplomatic discussions and engagements to the State and by extension, the nation.
