The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has called on members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to continue making sacrifices in delivering healthcare services to the people of Ogun State.
This appeal was made when the Speaker received the State branch of NMA, led by Dr. Azeem Ashimi, on a courtesy visit to the Assembly at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The Speaker acknowledged the challenges facing the health sector, including the shortage of manpower in government hospitals across the State.
He assured the association that the government is committed to addressing these challenges and urged the medical professionals to continue their selfless service to the people.
Rt. Hon. Elemide commended the members of NMA who have chosen to practice their profession in Nigeria, despite the challenges, and expressed the government’s appreciation for their dedication and hard work.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the health sector and ensuring that citizens have access to quality healthcare.
“I want to commend the Nigerian Medical Association for their dedication and hard work. They play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our citizens, and we appreciate their tireless efforts”, he stated.
Earlier in his presentation, Dr. Ashimi solicited the Assembly’s support for the amendment and domestication of law criminalising suicide, saying people who suffered mental health issues are the ones contemplating suicide and should be treated as such and not throwing suicide victims into jail.
He stressed the need to address shortage of manpower occasioned by migration and implementation of enhanced salary structure for medical practitioners.
