The Ogun State Government has commenced the extensive renovation and reconstruction of two major sports complexes—the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta—in preparation for the highly anticipated National Sports Festival (NSF), branded “2024 Gateway Games.”
During a site inspection of the facilities, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, assured the public that all renovation works would be completed within the scheduled time frame.
He noted that every aspect of the upgrade would be thoroughly tested before the commencement of the games, ensuring readiness for the event.
“We are committed to completing these renovations on time and ensuring that the facilities are ready for testing before the games,” the commissioner stated.
Work at the MKO Abiola International Stadium includes scraping the pitch at the main bowl and removing the tartan tracks. Meanwhile, at the Alake Sports Centre, the roofs of the indoor hall are also undergoing reconstruction.
Leading journalists through the sites, Hon. Isiaka further disclosed that the stadium’s VIP section would be expanded, and new facilities such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, and handball courts would be added to the complex.
“The expansion and addition of these facilities reflect our administration’s commitment to not only enhancing sports infrastructure but also promoting youth development programs,” the commissioner said.
He emphasized the critical role sports play in harnessing the potential of young people, channeling their energy into productive endeavors that contribute to both personal and state-wide socio-economic development.
Hon. Isiaka stressed the Ogun State Government’s dedication to hosting a world-class National Sports Festival that will highlight the rich cultural heritage of the state and inspire future athletes.
“This festival will bring together the best athletes from across the nation, and our goal is to inspire the next generation of talent while promoting our culture and rewarding excellence,” he added.
The commissioner also highlighted that the renovation efforts would further showcase Ogun’s preparedness to host such a prestigious national event, inviting corporate entities and individuals to partner with the government in ensuring the success of the festival.
“We are calling on well-meaning individuals and corporate organizations to join hands with the state government to make the National Sports Festival a resounding success,” Hon. Isiaka said.
He concluded by underscoring the importance of the event for Ogun State, stating that it presents an opportunity to display the state’s wealth of talent, potential, and hospitality.
“This is Ogun’s moment to shine, to show the nation the abundance of talent and potential that exists here,” he noted. Hon. Isiaka further reassured that the upgraded facilities would meet international standards, making Ogun an attractive location for future national and international sporting events.
The National Sports Festival is scheduled to take place from January 12 to January 26, 2025.
