Ogun Lawmakers Challenge Environment Ministry On Ecological Issues, Refuse Collection

Concerned by the need for a more coordinated and safe environment, members of the Ogun State House Committee on Finance and Appropriation have tasked the Ministry of Environment to evolve more measures towards ensuring improved flood and erosion control and address indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the State.

The members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation led by Hon. Musefiu Lamidi, threw the challenge while the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya led the team from the Ministry and related agencies in the sector to defend the Ministry’s 2024 budget proposal at the ongoing session at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The lawmakers who outlined the various communities in their constituencies where flooding and indiscriminate dumping of refuse by individuals and industrial organizations had caused environmental havoc, admonished the Ministry to consider ensuring strict adherence to environmental polices, while embarking on more enforcement drive across the three Senatorial Districts of the State.

They implored the Ministry to ensure holistic implementation of its 2024 budget proposal when passed by the Assembly and assented to by Governor Dapo Abiodun to address erosion prone challenge being faced by the rural communities in the State.

Responding, the Commissioner noted that the Ministry had embarked on impact assessment of some affected areas across the State in conjunction with some State and Federal Agencies, adding that the Ministry would continue to pursue diligently, its core mandate of making the environment clean and safe for all.

Other agencies that defended their budget proposals before the State lawmakers included the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, its Transport counterpart and the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE)
