The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has called on women leaders to intensify efforts for legislative reforms that will dismantle structural barriers to gender equality in Nigeria.
She emphasized the need for continuous advocacy to achieve true gender parity, noting that it is crucial to create a smoother pathway for the next generation of female leaders.
Salako-Oyedele made these remarks during her keynote address at the APC Women Summit and Dialogue, themed “Empowering the Next Generation of Female Leaders: Building Political Networks for Collective Success,” held at the banquet hall, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
In her address, she highlighted the importance of empowering future female leaders, stressing that “one of the greatest responsibilities for women in governance today is to ensure the road to leadership is easier for the next generation than it was for us.”
Reflecting on the journey of women in politics, Salako-Oyedele acknowledged the efforts of past female leaders who paved the way despite societal resistance.
“Our presence in politics today is not by accident; it is the result of the tireless efforts of strong women who, despite incredible challenges such as societal resistance, exclusion, and often hostility, pressed on for us to have the opportunity we have today,” she stated.
The Deputy Governor also underscored the importance of gender-responsive policies, explaining that representation is essential in driving meaningful change.
She called on both women leaders and supportive men, the “He-for-She” advocates, to continue championing gender equity, citing Ogun State as an example.
“Governor Dapo Abiodun understood the need for gender diversity, which is why he ensured his running mate was a woman,” she remarked, adding that “men like him recognize that advancing women benefits society as a whole.”
Salako-Oyedele extended her appreciation to the leadership of APC women, particularly Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the APC National Woman Leader, Dr. Mary Idele Alile.
She praised their dedication to amplifying women’s voices within the party’s agenda and urged them to continue strategizing on advancing women’s roles in leadership and governance.
In her remarks, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu emphasized qualities essential for women leaders, including integrity, compassion, and hard work.
She encouraged women to rally around others seeking office, saying, “Support and actively encourage women who aspire to elective positions, and together, help shape the future of women in politics, one woman at a time.”
Senator Tinubu further advised that women avoid setting imaginary limitations and instead focus on their potential.
She urged the National Woman Leader and APC State Women Leaders to unite in a presentation to the National Assembly, advocating for a legislative increase in the number of seats allocated to women.
