Team Ogun experienced a day of mixed results at the National Youth Games, Asaba 2024, showcasing both success and challenges across various events.
The team secured their first gold medal of the Games through Abdulrasaq Abolaji in Floor Artistic Gymnastics. They further excelled with another gold in Artistic Gymnastics and a bronze in Pommel Horse.
In the Shooting events, Team Ogun achieved notable success, clinching 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal. Atinuke Onabiyi shone brightly by winning gold in the Female 10m Air Rifle category, earning a spot on the national team for the upcoming Olympics. Onabiyi also set a new national record with a score of 502.1 and, alongside Idowu Tobiloba, added another gold medal to Ogun State’s tally. All three shooters from Ogun have been invited by the Nigeria Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) due to their exceptional performance.
In Athletics, the mixed 4×400m relay team and the male 100m team both won bronze medals, contributing to the overall success of the team.
However, the table tennis teams faced challenges, with both the male and female doubles teams losing their matches. The male duo of Mubarak Balogun and Roqeed Bisiriyu fell to Oyo State, while the female team was defeated by Delta State. On a positive note, the Para-Table Tennis team mirrored their national counterparts’ success at the Paralympics, winning 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. Raji Aisha secured 2 silver medals in Girls’ Singles and Girls’ Mixed Doubles, while Tobi Ogunyemi won silver in the Boys’ Singles.
Adams Makareem rounded off the medals table for Team Ogun with a silver in the Strokeplay event for Golf.
Overall, Team Ogun demonstrated strong performances in several events, highlighting both their strengths and areas for improvement as the Games continue.
