The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for proactive measures to prevent flash flooding in the state.
The lawmakers urged the state government, residents, and local government councils to take immediate action to maintain flood control and drainage channels.
The resolution followed a debate on a motion sponsored by Hon. Folawewo Salami, who noted that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency’s 2024 weather forecast predicts significant rain and coastal flooding.
He emphasized the need for desilting and dredging drainage channels, awareness campaigns, and punitive measures for neglect.
The Assembly requested regular reports from the State Ministry of Environment and Local Government Councils on flood control and drainage maintenance efforts.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, called for synergy between the Physical Planning Ministry and the Environment Ministry to supervise desilting and clearing of drainage and waterways.
“The lives and properties of our citizens are paramount, and we must take all necessary steps to prevent flooding,” said Hon. Salami.
“We urge the state government and local councils to take proactive measures to ensure effective flood control across the state,”
“Let us work together to prevent flooding and ensure the safety of our people,” added the Speaker
