The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the State Government to take immediate action to address the escalating cult clashes and violence across the State.
The resolution also seeks the appointment of a Commissioner for Youth to drive policies and programs that would engage youths and address the menace of cult clashes.
The passage of the resolution followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sherif, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, after lawmakers debated the escalating violence of cult clashes in the State.
The sponsor of the motion, Hon. Adebisi Oyedele, noted that the House observed with serious concern the disturbing trend of incessant cult killings across the State, especially in Abeokuta, which began approximately six weeks ago, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives in 42 days.
Lawmakers expressed concern about the sporadic shootings and killings among young people, which are affecting businesses and tarnishing the State’s reputation.
They called for advocacy, orientation, and intelligence information from residents to security operatives to address the issue.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, decried the celebration of moral decadence in society, leading to the spread of crimes and criminalities among youth, and implored them to persevere and engage in lawful activities.
In a separate development, the Assembly challenged journalists in the State to uphold objectivity while reporting government activities, and played host to the FRSC Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, admonishing the officials to carry out more enlightenment campaigns and reorientation to reduce road crashes rather than imposing fines on motorists.
