OGUN ASSEMBLY MANAGEMENT UNDERGOES TRAINING ON LEADERSHIP, PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

Ogun State  House of Assembly has organised a day leadership training programme for its management on the need  for the top the administrators and policy planners to adopt professional ethics and good leadership skills with a view to making the entire workforce more committed in the discharge of their duties.

Declaring the trainning programme held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta open, the Speaker, Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo said that human capacity development remained instrumental to the achievement of virile and purposeful legislature, hence the Assembly under his leadership was committed to building a virile, diligent and purposeful legislature through training and retraining programmes for all categories of staff at the Assembly.

He added that the training was apt as it would improve the performance and reorientate the members of staff for the achievements of excellence in quality service delivery, with an admonition to participants to seize the opportunity to broaden their horizon on the workplace ethics and good conduct towards supporting the lawmakers in the enactment of relevant people oriented legislations.

Delivering his paper titled Professional Ethics in the Workplace” at the workshop, a university don and Head, Department of Employment Relations and Human Relations Management, University of Lagos, Dr Akeem Akinwale explained that Professional Ethics in the Workplace, harped on the need to build and sustain ethical behaviour in workplace.

Akinwale stated that it was important to give adequate attention to professional ethics in the workplace with a focus on critical situations in the public sector of the nation’s economy, positing that the vision and mission of organizations could only be achieved with strict compliance to ethics irrespective of hierarchy in workplace.

He remarked that the bureaucratic ethos provided an effective way to get the work done, especially in routine tasks, with a task to top echelons in the public service to set measures towards striking a balance between punctuality, productivity and performance to promote optimum performance in the public sector.

Stressing the need for the encouragement of specialisation and professionalism, the resource person further advised that objective assessment and performance must be prioritised in personnel promotion, with recruitment into public service based on qualifications and merit.

Corroborating Akinwale’s view, Dr. Samuel Akintunde in his lecture equally called for transformational leadership and followership, stating that positive attitude to work was the starting point to sustainable progress in the public sector.

Other papers presented at the training included: “Public Service Rules /Code of Conduct in the Civil Service; Leadership and Followership” by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Establishments and Training, Alhaji Kolawole Ogunlana and “The Role Model” by Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo. 

Responding, participants including Femi Adenmosun, Barr. Funmi Adeyemi and Lawal Jamiu lauded the leadership of the Assembly for walking its talk on the area of human capital development, which they noted was an educative and insightful avenue for them as management staff to equip themselves with more relevant knowledge that would in turn improve their output in their various duties and responsibilities as management staff.

They assured that the gains of the training would continue to reflect in their interaction with other members of staff and the general public thereby enhancing productivity.
