Ogun State House of Assembly has taken significant steps to enhance the state’s justice system and local government administration.
In a recent session, the Assembly passed the Magistrates’ Court (Amendment) Law, 2023, aimed at strengthening access to justice for the people of Ogun State.
The passage of the bill followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Justice, Ethics, and Public Petitions, chaired by Hon. Oluseun Adesanya.
The committee’s recommendations were adopted clause-by-clause, and the bill was subsequently read for the third time before being transmitted to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for assent.
In addition to the Magistrates’ Court amendment, the Assembly also considered the Local Government (Amendment) Law, 2024, which seeks to create a Department of Audit Investigation and Control within the Local Government Administration.
This amendment aims to promote transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery at the local level.
Lawmakers, including Hon. Dickson Awolaja, Hon. Oluseun Adesanya, Hon. Folawewo Salami, and Hon. Yusuf Sherif, expressed support for the bill, citing its potential to improve resource management, enhance career progression for local government staff, and strengthen accounting system checks and balances.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide emphasized the bill’s potential to enhance separation of powers principles and promote responsible local government finance management.
The Local Government (Amendment) Law, 2024, has been referred to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for further legislative action.
The Assembly’s efforts demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the state’s justice system and local government administration for the benefit of Ogun State residents.
