…Urges OGSIEC to Follow Electoral Guidelines
The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the Management of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to strictly adhere to its electoral guidelines in preparation for the local government elections scheduled for November 16.
During an interface with OGSIEC and the State Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), led by its Chairman, Comrade Sanyaolu Abayomi, Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide emphasized the importance of following constitutional and electoral laws. “We assure that the Assembly is ready to collaborate with the Commission to ensure a free and fair election,” he stated.
Other lawmakers joined the Speaker in urging OGSIEC to ensure compliance with the nation’s constitution throughout the electoral process. Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye and Ewekoro State Constituency representative Yusuf Amosun highlighted the necessity of preventing avoidable litigation before, during, and after the elections. They expressed the Assembly’s readiness to assist in amending the State electoral law if needed.
Earlier, IPAC Chairman Comrade Sanyaolu, represented by IPAC PRO Itunu Abioro, advocated for a reduction in the administrative fees charged by OGSIEC to facilitate greater participation in the local government elections.
Responding to the concerns raised, Mr. Tunji Akonni, Commissioner 1 in charge of Operations at OGSIEC, affirmed that the Commission has been actively engaging with stakeholders, including IPAC, and is committed to upholding the approved electoral guidelines in line with State electoral law. He advised political parties to present credible candidates and emphasized the importance of having party agents to monitor votes at polling stations, noting that many political parties lacked representation on election days.
As the November elections approach, the Ogun State House of Assembly aims to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process for all participants.
