Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption has urged the State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) to embark on vigorous campaigns to alert residents of the state on the impending flood season.
The committee, led by Chairman Hon. Damilare Bello, made this call while hosting the OGEPA management team, led by Permanent Secretary Mr. Sam Oyeleye, as part of the ongoing review of the 2021 and 2022 audit reports for government ministries, departments, and agencies.
With the rainy season approaching, the committee emphasized the need for OGEPA to begin clearing drainages and educating the public on flood prevention measures to avoid incidents of flooding across the state.
Hon. Bello stressed that a robust enlightenment campaign is crucial to mitigate the effects of flooding, which can lead to loss of lives and properties.
In response, Permanent Secretary Mr. Sam Oyeleye revealed that the Ministry of Environment is already working with the Ministry of Physical Planning to ensure that all developers obtain the necessary drainage permits, adhering to standard practices to prevent erosion and flooding.
He emphasized the importance of having a standard drainage system in place before constructing any structure, allowing for the free flow of water and reducing the risk of flooding.
During the meeting, the committee also reviewed audit reports for the State Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency, commending Special Adviser Sola Arobieke for his efforts in attracting investors to the state.
Additionally, the committee examined reports for the State Ministry of Rural Development and the State Planning and Development Permit Authority, ensuring transparency and accountability in government operations.
This proactive approach by the Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption demonstrates their commitment to ensuring the well-being of residents and promoting sustainable development in the state.
