Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed confidence in the preparedness of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Following a closed-door caucus meeting at the Government House in Benin City, Governor Obaseki commended the commitment of both the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election.
Governor Obaseki highlighted his satisfaction with the recent statements made by the security agencies, particularly the Inspector General of Police, who pledged to support the peace process and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
He also lauded INEC for its efforts and stated his confidence in their commitment to conduct a transparent election.
The governor urged PDP leaders and members to continue mobilizing support across Edo State, emphasizing the readiness of the party for the election.
“We are ready for this election. From our caucus meeting, we have ensured all necessary preparations have been made”.
“Our leaders are heading back to their constituencies to continue mobilizing and ensuring our candidate receives full support,” Obaseki stated.
He further expressed optimism that PDP members currently detained in Abuja would be released once the courts resume, allowing them to participate in the election process.
He added that the party was prepared to sign the Peace Accord once their members were granted bail.
Governor Obaseki also addressed rumors of a potential postponement of the election, affirming that INEC Chairman Prof. Yakubu had assured him that the election would take place as scheduled on September 21, 2024.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, reinforced the party’s confidence in its preparations and called on Edo residents to come out and vote without fear.
He expressed the party’s belief that the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, stands out among the candidates and will be the people’s choice for the governorship.
Dr. Aziegbemi emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “We believe that we are one, and nobody will come to hurt anyone at the polling units. Edo people should feel safe and confident to make the right choice for the future of our state.”
