Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s re-election bid received a significant boost on Monday when former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed his support during a visit to Ondo State.
Obasanjo, in Akure for the commissioning of the Ojaja Park estate project by the Ooni of Ife, also made a courtesy visit to Governor Aiyedatiwa at the Presidential Lodge of the Government House.
Demonstrating political camaraderie, Obasanjo rallied support for Aiyedatiwa and encouraged Ondo residents to back the governor in the upcoming election.
Speaking on his support, the former President remarked, “I wish you all the best in this crucial period. The challenges of campaigning are significant, but with unity and perseverance, success is attainable.”
During their discussion, Obasanjo shared anecdotes from his own political campaigns, recounting the grueling 1999 election period. “I remember covering the six southwestern states in a single day,” he said. “We started in Akure, Ondo State, proceeded to Ekiti, and eventually reached Lagos by 8 pm.”
After being briefed by Aiyedatiwa on his campaign activities, Obasanjo further extended his best wishes for the governor’s re-election journey.
The former President expressed admiration for Aiyedatiwa’s dedication, noting that the challenges of the campaign season are a vital part of the political process.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, visibly appreciative, thanked Obasanjo for his endorsement and longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s development.
He praised the former President’s impact on the nation, saying, “Your achievements as President remain indelible in our country’s history.”
With a touch of humor, Aiyedatiwa described Obasanjo as a “good recurring decimal in the life of the nation,” a remark that prompted laughter from Obasanjo, who suggested it would make a fitting newspaper headline.
Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, Aiyedatiwa shared his admiration for Obasanjo’s humility and humanity despite his distinguished military and political career.
He remarked on the former President’s enduring dedication to Nigerian unity and progress, underscoring Obasanjo’s role as a leader of humility and influence.
