Chief Chris Isiguzo, NUJ President has appealed to the Ogun State House of Assembly on the smooth passage of Journalism Enhancement Bill when presented before the Assembly.
The President made this appeal on Thursday in Abeokuta when he paid a visit to the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kunle Oluomo at the Assembly complex.
Isiguzo noted that, the Bill when passed would cater for the welfare of journalists in the country and provide job satisfaction for every practicing journalists in the country.
He notified the Speaker that the NUJ was collating signatures for the Bill currently on the second reading at the National Assembly from all state councils of NUJ in the country.
“Mr. Speaker, we must team up if this democracy is to be protected, as part of my visit to all states, I have deem it fit to meet with all Speakers of the states Assemblies because we are collating signatures for the journalists enhancement bill.
“So, we don’t want it to be strange to the Speaker when it gets to House of Assembly, we should not undermine our democratic setting ,” he said.
Isiguzo therefore, commended the speaker and other members of the 9th assembly for a job well done since the inception of the present administration in the state.
Responding, the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, appealed to journalists across the country to join hands with government in building the nation’s democracy.
He assured the NUJ President of the Assembly’s speedy passage of the Journalists Enhancement Bill when presented at the Assembly.
Oluomo noted that media practitioners had major role to play in sustaining the nation’s democracy through balance and objective reportage.
He urged journalists to be truthful at all when reporting events, saying that one sided report was not good in the promotion of the nations democracy.
He said that the assembly would continue to do things in a way that would bring dividends of democracy to the nooks and crannies of the state.
