Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar has been indefinitely suspended by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) on grounds of professional misconduct and defamation.
This decision comes seven months after she was fined N10 million by an Abuja High Court for defaming Apostle Johnson Suleman, the leader of Omega Fire Ministries International.
The AGN made this announcement via a statement posted on their official Instagram page, revealing that Abubakar’s suspension followed a two-year covert investigation into her involvement in defaming fellow Nollywood colleagues and prominent public figures.
The actress has been accused of spreading false and damaging information, including allegations of extramarital affairs involving high-profile individuals.
According to the guild’s statement: “Following the thorough investigative report by the Special Secret Investigation Panel, it was uncovered that Miss Halima Abubakar was behind the defamatory information circulating since 2022. As a result, she has been placed on indefinite suspension and will face the National Disciplinary Committee to determine further action.”
Ban on Acting and Guild Activities
As part of her suspension, Abubakar is barred from participating in any AGN-related activities or film productions. The guild also revealed that other female members of the AGN are under investigation, particularly regarding rumors linking them to dealings with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
This suspension follows the April 2023 court ruling in which Abubakar was ordered to pay N10 million in damages to Apostle Suleman.
The ruling came after she accused Suleman of reneging on a promise of marriage and inflicting her with a life-threatening illness.
In response, Suleman had filed a N1 billion defamation lawsuit against the actress earlier in January 2023.
