The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the latest increase in electricity tariffs, criticizing the federal government for failing to reverse the hike as promised.

In a statement on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero called the new tariff increase from N206.80 to N209.50, effective July 1, 2024, “a height of impunity and arrogance.” Ajaero argued that the increase will harm businesses and worsen consumer hardships, especially following a previous 250% tariff hike that led to widespread protests and business closures.

Ajaero accused the government of insincerity and insensitivity for imposing another hike despite previous assurances of a reversal.

He criticized the excuses provided by electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) for the increase, including exchange rates, interest rates, and gas costs, suggesting these are symptoms of a deeper problem rather than solutions.

He demanded an immediate reversal of the tariff hike, describing it as unjust and harmful to both people and the economy.
