Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed deep concern on Tuesday, February 27, stating that Nigerians are facing severe hunger as a result of the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
Ajaero emphasized the urgent need for the federal government to address this critical situation.
Leading a large group of protesters, including civil society organizations, to the National Assembly Complex, Ajaero remarked, “We are here because there is hunger in the land. History will not forgive us if we do not protest at the level of hunger in the land. It is to signal to the authorities that there is a problem in the land.”
He highlighted issues such as the depreciating value of the Naira, escalating insecurity, and a rising unemployment rate, calling for immediate measures to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Ajaero indicated that the NLC would determine its next course of action.
During the protest, the NLC President presented a letter containing their grievances to the representative of the National Assembly’s leadership.
Diket Plang, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, accepted the letter on behalf of the National Assembly, acknowledging awareness of the prevailing hardship and assuring that prompt efforts would be made to address the situation.
Plang guaranteed that the dispatched letter would receive due attention.
