A social media post has ignited widespread reactions after a man announced that his mother-in-law’s Christmas chicken was being sold for ₦30,000.

Shared on November 28, 2024, the tweet, intended to promote sales in Ughelli and Warri, quickly turned into a heated discussion about the soaring cost of living in Nigeria.

“Guys, if you are around Ughelli or Warri environ, kindly patronise my mother-in-law please. She sells each for ₦30,000 only,” the user wrote.

The price tag sparked outrage, humor, and concern among Nigerians, with many lamenting the escalating cost of food and other essentials.

One user, @abazwhyllzz, exclaimed, “Chicken ₦30k??? Something I used to buy for ₦1,500 like two years ago. Jesus 😳.”

Others linked the rising cost to Nigeria’s economic challenges. “This kind of chicken was barely ₦2,500 before APC came into power and sodomised Nigeria’s economy. E don red now! ₦30k 🤐,” commented @omorogiec.

Some users chose humor to express their disbelief. “Dey play ₦30k for this chicken? 😂,” quipped @Saadabidemi, while @shalomdfirst added, “Chicken ₦30k? E better make I chop crayfish this Christmas o😂😭.”

The comparison to Nigeria’s minimum wage also drew attention. “Lol ₦30k each? Wetin happen? Exactly minimum wages 😂,” wrote @iam_mozeas.

Amid the jesting, many expressed concern about how ordinary Nigerians could cope with such prices. “Chicken don reach ₦30k for this country? This is ridiculous. How will the poor cope with such an amount? 😭,” lamented @jidifeanyi.

Some users jokingly suggested alternatives. “Na this year we go finally use lizard meat 🦎 do Christmas,” tweeted @Chrizkhalifa21.

The uproar highlights the growing struggles of Nigerians grappling with economic hardship as the festive season approaches, with many questioning how basic traditions can be maintained in the face of soaring costs.
