The acting Secretary for Education, FCTA, Umoru Marafa, said in a statement on Monday that schools that had put in place measures based on the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19’s guidelines and had been certified as ready for resumption could re-open.
Marafa advised schools that had not been cleared by the department to hasten up to meet the requirement for resumption.
“Students are hereby advised to prepare for resumption on August 4 and are enjoined to continue to read for their examinations,” he stated.
In a related development, the Bauchi State Government has directed that schools with Senior Secondary School 3 students taking the 2020 WASSCE should resume on Thursday, August 6.
A communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting and made available to journalists on Monday, stated that all students must come to school with at least one “washable face mask.”
The government directed each school to have a functional clinic, pointing out that where there was none, a classroom should be converted to a clinic and there must be a holding area for isolating suspected cases.
Also, the Kano State Government said on Monday that only SSS3 pupils, who would take their 2020 WASSCE, would be allowed to resume school on August 10.
The state Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru, disclosed this on Monday in Kano.
He said a total of 11,046 pupils in SSS3 were expected to take the exam from 199 secondary schools out of which 33 were boarding.
“The Commissioner for Health has been mandated to procure all the necessary equipment for distribution immediately the students resume on August 10, 2020,” Kiru stated.
Similarly, the Edo State Government has okayed Monday, August 10, as resumption date for graduating students in secondary schools.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Education, Jimoh Ijegbai, said, “Only students in SSS3, who have enrolled for the WASSCE and schools that have enrolled for the NECO Basic Education Certificate Examinations are to re-open on Monday, August 10, 2020.
“A date for the re-opening of the other classes will be announced in due course. Meanwhile, proprietors of private schools are to strictly comply with the provisions of school re-opening guidelines obtainable from the Ministry of Education.”
In the same vein, the Kaduna State Government, on Monday, announced August 10 for the reopening of schools for SSS3 students across the state.
According to the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Shehu Mohammed, all principals of secondary schools should make arrangement to receive SSS3 boarding students on August 9 and day students on August 10.
“This is to enable the SSS3 students to sit the West African Senior School Certificate Examination slated for August 17, 2020,” he added.
The commissioner warned that on no condition must schools reopen before the August 10, adding that school principals must agree to the COVID-19 guidelines.
