Nigerian Navy Officer Who Saved 59 Lives in Daring Rescue Buried with Honors

Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza, a heroic officer who lost his life while leading a rescue operation in Rivers State, has been laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

Gwaza, who served as the Base Operations Officer at the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Bonny, tragically died on July 30, 2024, while saving 59 people from the sinking dredging vessel, MV AMBIKA 4.

His bravery and selflessness have been celebrated as he was buried with full military honors.

During the funeral ceremony, Captain M.A. Mohammed, Commanding Officer in Bonny, praised Gwaza’s bravery and selflessness. He recalled Gwaza’s courageous acts both in and out of duty, noting his willingness to face risks head-on for the sake of others.

Gwaza’s widow, Salome, expressed pride in her husband’s heroism, reflecting on their nine years of marriage and his dedicated service. She promised to raise their children with the same love and values he instilled in their family.

Gwaza’s elder sister, Ishaku Matilda, remembered him as a figure of greatness and protection throughout her life.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, described Gwaza’s death as a profound loss. He highlighted Gwaza’s exceptional service record and commitment to rescuing the crew members from imminent danger, underscoring his ultimate sacrifice in the service of both the Nigerian Navy and humanity.
