The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to work towards achieving lasting peace in Nigeria if confirmed by the National Assembly.
Oluyede made the promise on Wednesday during his appearance before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army at the National Assembly Complex.
Addressing the committee, Oluyede emphasized the importance of collaboration with neighboring countries to tackle insecurity and improve safety across the region.
“I am honoured to be considered for this role and look forward to contributing my utmost best by working with the National Assembly and other stakeholders in bringing lasting peace to Nigeria,” Oluyede said.
Oluyede’s confirmation follows the tragic death of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, after a brief illness.
Oluyede had been appointed in an acting capacity pending Lagbaja’s recovery and was subsequently tasked with continuing the responsibilities after the late General’s funeral on November 15, 2024.
Reflecting on his extensive career, Oluyede shared, “I have served this great nation for over 30 years, and my exposure to national security issues at various levels of military command has adequately prepared me for this role. In the past few years, I’ve been involved in managing the operations of the Nigerian Army, and I am ready to lead it to even greater successes.”
The Acting COAS further assured the committee that, if confirmed, he would ensure the army is equipped with the necessary resources, including aircraft, to address Nigeria’s security challenges effectively.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, acknowledged Nigeria’s potential to confront security threats but stressed the need for adaptive strategies to address both traditional and emerging challenges. “The current dynamics of global security demand innovative strategies,” Benson stated. “We must ensure our military is prepared for threats in cyberspace, economics, and the socio-political landscape.”
Benson also underscored the importance of professionalism in Oluyede’s leadership, urging him to prioritize troop welfare and build synergy among security agencies. “If confirmed, you will be expected to foster synergy among security agencies, prioritize the welfare of troops, and uphold the trust of Nigerians,” he said.
