The national power grid has once again collapsed, leaving Nigeria in a widespread blackout.
This recent collapse marks a continuation of the country’s ongoing power struggles, as October alone witnessed multiple disruptions.
Despite repeated assurances from the Federal Government of a long-term solution, the power situation remains grim.
This latest breakdown occurred on Saturday, October 19, 2024, adding to a string of failures that make this the eighth recorded grid collapse this year.
Within just one week, the grid has failed three times, further frustrating citizens and industries that depend on stable electricity.
As of 2:35 p.m. on the day of the collapse, data indicated that none of the power generation companies were supplying a single megawatt of electricity to the national grid. On October 21, just two days after the initial collapse, the grid suffered another disruption.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed this to a fire outbreak at the Jebba transmission station, which has compounded issues for an already fragile grid.
Speaking on the recurring failures, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, emphasized the historical improvement in grid stability. “Clearly, between 2020 to date (five years), we recorded 14 total and six partial grid disturbances totalling 20, which represents a 76.47 per cent reduction in grid disturbance when compared to the previous five years (2015 to 2019), where we had 64 total and 21 partial grid disturbances, totalling 85 times,” Mbah stated.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu highlighted aging infrastructure as a core reason for the persistent grid collapses, reinforcing the urgent need for modernization.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) echoed these concerns, warning that frequent grid failures have reversed significant progress in enhancing grid stability and infrastructure.
As of now, TCN has yet to specify the cause of the current collapse, leaving Nigerians awaiting further details on the latest breakdown.
