Rivers: The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), has called for a review of the transportation of petroleum products in the country, following a devastating tanker inferno in Rivers State that claimed several lives and destroyed properties.
The NGF Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, made the call during a condolence visit to Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on Sunday. AbdulRazaq described the incident as a “huge loss” and expressed his sympathy to the people and government of Rivers State.
The NGF chairman revealed that discussions are ongoing among the 36 state governors and federal agencies in the oil and gas industry to improve safety regulations and expand pipelines for safer transportation of petroleum products.
He noted that Nigeria relies heavily on pipelines for the movement of petroleum products and emphasized the need to strengthen regulations in the sector.
AbdulRazaq also mentioned a similar incident in Ogun State involving a compressed natural gas (CNG) tanker, highlighting the need for improved safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“The Nigerian Governors’ Forum is committed to finding solutions to ensure safer transportation of petroleum products and mitigate the risk of such incidents in the future”, he said.
