The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results for the 2024 internal Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The release, made by Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, Registrar and CEO of NECO, on Thursday at the Council Headquarters in Minna, Niger State, reveals that 828,284 candidates, or 60.55 percent, achieved five credits including English language and Mathematics.
A total of 1,376,423 students registered for the examination, comprising 709,950 males and 669,473 females. Of these, 1,367,736 candidates sat for the exam, with 702,112 males and 665,624 females participating.
Professor Wushishi noted that 1,147,597 candidates, accounting for 83.90 percent, obtained five credits and above, irrespective of English language and Mathematics. Additionally, 2,267 candidates with special needs were accommodated.
The council reported a 30.1 percent decrease in examination malpractice cases this year, with 8,437 instances compared to 12,030 in 2023. Wushishi highlighted that Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi states showed the best performance, while Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, and Zamfara were the lowest performers.
Wushishi also disclosed that 40 schools across 17 states were implicated in mass cheating. These schools will be invited for discussions before sanctions are imposed, with one school in Ekiti State already recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.
Furthermore, 21 supervisors in 12 states have been recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding and abetting, extortion, drunkenness, abscondment, and negligence.
