The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has authenticated the emergence of an unknown disease in Sokoto state.
According to Dr. Jide Idris, the director general of the agency, a total of 164 suspected cases have been identified across six wards in Isa local government area. These cases include symptoms such as abdominal swelling, fever, vomiting, and weight loss, primarily affecting children aged 4 – 13 years, along with some adults.
The NCDC, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, initiated investigations upon notification of the cases on March 21, 2024. Four deaths have been reported among the suspected cases.
While similar incidents were documented in 2023 without a conclusive diagnosis, the NCDC has deployed a National Rapid Response Team to further investigate and respond to the current situation.
Presently, two suspected cases are under observation at Uthman Dan Fodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, with one case discharged due to improved symptoms. Additionally, four suspected cases are admitted at Isa General Hospital, while approximately 130 cases receive care either at Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) or through home care within the affected LGA.
Initial assessments have ruled out an infectious origin, prompting investigations into other potential causes, including heavy metal poisoning. Blood tests on the index and initial suspected cases revealed elevated levels of lead (Pb) and Chromium (Cr), with subsequent tests indicating high levels of lead in affected individuals.
Dr. Idris urged members of affected and nearby communities to remain vigilant and report any individuals displaying the mentioned symptoms to the nearest health facilities or contact the NCDC toll-free line for assistance.
