Musiliu ‘MC Oluomo’ Akinsanya, days after the Court of Appeal in Abuja nullified his presidency, has officially assumed office as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks the first public declaration by MC Oluomo since the appellate court upheld Ibikunle Baruwa as the legitimate NURTW president.

MC Oluomo, who was elected unopposed at an election held at the union’s zonal secretariat in Osogbo, had his presidency invalidated by a three-member panel of the appellate court.

The panel, comprising Justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi, reaffirmed a March 11 ruling by the National Industrial Court, which recognized Baruwa as the rightful president.

In addition to nullifying MC Oluomo’s election, the court imposed a fine of N100,000 against him, payable to the respondents.

Speaking on the matter, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana emphasized the need for compliance with the court’s decision. “The federal government must act immediately to reinstate Mr. Ibikunle Baruwa as the NURTW president,” he said.

Falana also called on the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to enforce the ruling and ensure that Baruwa’s leadership is restored without delay.

The unfolding events have sparked widespread reactions, with MC Oluomo’s declaration drawing scrutiny amid legal uncertainties. As tensions rise, the situation has underscored the ongoing leadership struggles within the union.
