… students describe management’s directive as wickedness

There is an imminent mass failure at the Ogun state-owned institution, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, as the management allegedly forced the students to present tax clearance before they can be given examination pass.

It was gathered that the insistence by the management that the students must present tax clearance has led to panic and tension among the students populace.

A two-day visit to the institution by our reporter showed that many of the students especially those in National Diploma 1 (ND1) and Higher National Diploma 1 (HND1) were currently gripped by fear and anxiety as they were not given examination pass without presenting evidence of tax clearance .

When our correspondent investigated what brought about the panic, it was discovered that many of the students were not prepared for the impromptu examination time-table that was rolled out about two weeks ago.

Findings revealed that the tax clearance was not introduced in the first semester when the major registration usually took place for fresh students both in the ND and HND classes.

It was however learnt that the management suddenly introduced a compulsory presentation of tax clearance for the ND1 and HND2 students during the second semester with a strict rule of no tax clearance, no examination pass.

For weeks, our correspondent gathered that the students have been running helter skelter in getting the tax clearance which cost about ten thousand naira.

Further findings revealed that apart from having the tax clearance, the students still need to come to the linkages department within the school premises to do a verification before they can be allowed to use it for registration or examination pass.

It was however discovered that the number of registration point available for the verification at the linkages department has contributed to the slow pace process which has made the place crowded every day.

A visit by our correspondent to the linkages department showed that the students in the hundreds were seen hanging around, being on the queues and going through different stress in getting the verification done.

Some of the students who spoke with our reporter lamented and complained that the tax clearance verification has made reading difficult for them.

Many of the students who disclosed that they used to come early as 6am to the linkages just to be among the first set of people to do the verification, lamented that they are not prepared for the examination that is scheduled to begin on Friday, March 5, 2021.

The students described the directive of the management as wickedness and unfair looking at how much money they have spent in this semester alone.

While some were optimistic that the management may probably postpone the examination, some of the students believed they will fail because there is no enough preparation.

Government extorting us with tax clearance, students allege

The students have alleged that the state government through the management is extorting them through the tax clearance.

The students complained that it is unbearable for them to pay huge money for school fees and still be forced to pay tax.

One of the students identified as Bashir Adeoye described the directive of the management as a deliberate act to make life unbearable for the students.

Adeoye noted that the collection of tax clearance from them is illegal and should be stopped .

He said, “I don’t know why the management will be asking us for tax clearance again. We have spent a lot of money in this school and all they could do is to make it compulsory.

“Our parents are paying tax, thy are still making it a compulsory thing for us as a student. This is pure wickedness.”

Also another student simply identified as David noted that the government is unfair to them with the compulsory tax payment.

He stressed,” we are not benefiting anything from this government, still they are asking us to pay tax. This is a daylight robbery that must be condemned. It is wickedness from the management to make this a compulsory requirement for collection of examination pass.”

We are not ready, please postpone the examination, students beg

Our correspondent discovered that many of the students at the linkages look tired and exhausted from the stress they went through in doing the verification.

Speaking with the some of the students who were able to do the tax clearance verification, they claim they are not prepared for the examination.

Some of the students lamented that they still need to go through the stress of queuing to collect the examination pass.

A student, Motunrayo Oyebade said, “this stress is too much, the management should just postpone this examination.

“Imagine, I will still need to go through another stress of queuing to get my examination pass. This is unbearable.

Another student, Qudus Akinola noted,” I have not been able to read or prepare for any examination because of this. I was here yesterday, but I was unable to do it, I need to come very early today just to do this. You can imagine the stress.

” If I write any examination like this, I am sure I won’t be able to write like I should have done. I just hope I don’t fail woefully, because there is no preparation at all.

“However, further findings revealed that some of the security operatives attached to the linkages department have started extorting the students by collecting money from them so as to have a stress-free verification.

Our correspondent who pretended to be student alongside two other HND 1 students approached one of the security operatives who express readiness to help in making the process stress-free if the students are ready to greese his palm.

The security operative bill the three students N3,500 as the fee for the stress-free registration. After the payment of the money, the tax clearance receipts of the students were collected and the verification was done within an hour.

It was observed that the minimum time a student can spend before he can get his verification done is four to five hours, but with money, you can get it done in an hour.

Also, confirming the extortion, another student identified as Dare told this reporter that he and his four other friends paid N4000 to one of the security operatives so that they can get a stress-free verification process.

It was also observed that those that greese the palms of the security operatives don’t need to be on the queue or under the sun before they can get their verification done.

All efforts to get the Public Relations Officer, Yemi Akinola proved abortive as all calls made to him via his two lines with this reporter was bouncing back.

He could not be reached as of the time of filing this report .
