The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of one Lanre Ogungbe, found dead in a hotel room located at Soyoye, Abeokuta.
The incident, which occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday, was reported by the hotel owner to the Lafenwa Police Division.
In a statement issued on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, revealed that two items—a bottle of an alcoholic drink known as “Lakoko” and a bottle of pesticide identified as “Sniper”—were found beside the deceased in the hotel room.
The statement detailed, “At approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday, the owner of Authentic Hotel on Soyoye Road informed the Divisional Police Officer that a customer, Lanre Ogungbe, had checked into the hotel for a short rest. The hotel’s receptionist noticed that Ogungbe had not been seen for a while and went to check on him, only to discover his lifeless body lying on the bed. She immediately alerted the hotel manager, who then informed the hotel owner. They secured the scene, leaving everything untouched, before contacting the police.”
Upon arrival, detectives found the deceased on the bed, alongside the empty bottles of “Lakoko” and “Sniper,” both of which were suspected to have been consumed. “There were no visible signs of violence on the body,” Ms. Odutola confirmed. The body was subsequently moved to the General Hospital in Ijaiye, where it was officially pronounced dead, and later taken to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Ms. Odutola added that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
