A tragic fire incident has claimed the life of a man identified as Obinna, who was sleeping in his apartment when the fire broke out in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State.
The unfortunate event occurred on Saturday evening at around 7:30 p.m. at No. 13, Olarenwaju Street, off Oki Street, Iyana-Ipaja.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, informed journalists on Sunday that the police had received a distress call from a resident of the house.
“After a distress call was received, the Divisional Police Officer immediately visited the scene with operatives of the division,” Hundeyin stated.
According to the spokesperson, the fire service was immediately contacted, but by the time the flames were extinguished, the tenant, who was asleep in his room, had been severely burnt and lost his life in the fire.
“A tenant, who was sleeping in his room, got burnt and died in the fire incident,” Hundeyin added.
He also revealed that both photographs of the victim and the burnt building had been taken as part of the ongoing investigation.
The victim’s body has since been evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital in Yaba for a post-mortem examination.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, Hundeyin assured that the police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
