A Grade 1 Area Court sitting at Lugbe, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced one Safijany Mohammed, 34, to 18 months in a correctional centre for stealing a vehicle.

The judge, Malam Aliyu Kagarko, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the offences of criminal trespass, attempt to steal and stealing preferred against him.

Kagarko, however, granted Mohammed, whose address was not provided, the option of N50,000 fine in lieu of imprisonment.

The prosecutor, Mr Stephen Osho, had earlier informed the court that the convict trespassed into the workshop of one Ismailia Abbas and stole a vehicle, but was caught.

He said the stolen vehicle belonged to a customer of the complainant.

According to Osho, when questioned by the police following his arrest, the convict also confessed to stealing some vehicle parts worth N130,000.

The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 348 and 95 of the Penal Code.
