Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed that the minimum wage for workers in the state has been increased to N85,000, affirming that the state is financially equipped to support this adjustment.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the decision was based on Lagos State’s financial capacity and not driven by competition with other states.
He noted that the adjustment was necessary due to the rising cost of living in the state.
“I am pleased to inform you that after discussions with our union, the minimum wage in Lagos is now N85,000,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He stressed that the increase reflects the economic realities of Lagos and is aimed at helping workers cope with the premium cost of living in the state.
The governor added that ensuring workers earned a fair wage was essential to maintaining their well-being.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted that the state government had implemented an earlier salary raise this year and expressed his desire to further increase the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025.
“I hope that by January, I can come back and announce that the minimum wage in Lagos has been raised to N100,000. This is not a competition, but a reflection of our commitment to ensuring that our workers earn a wage that supports their livelihoods and makes them feel the impact of government support,” he stated.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of Lagos State workers, ensuring that their needs are met, and that the government continues to respond effectively to the challenges they face.
