The Lagos State Government, through four of its agencies, has tasked youths to promote environmental sustainability and activism, declaring its readiness to further enlighten students on the vulnerability of the environment, unfriendly environmental practices and the need to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

A joint statement issued by the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, (LASEPA), Dr. Dolapo Fasawe; the Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni; Managing Director, Lagos State Signage & Advertising Agency (LASAA), Prince Adedamola Docemo; and the General Manager, Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, urged students to sustain the environment against pollution.

The statement was released after an advocacy talk and quiz competition organised to test students on basic topics about the environment during the 25th convocation ceremony of the Lagos State University (LASU), held in Ojo, Lagos.

According to the organisers, the advocacy was initiated to felicitate with Lagos State University, (LASU), on its 25th Convocation and further reawaken the consciousness of students to actions against pollution.

“In recognition of the importance of our youths as agents of change who need to urgently show commitment, through their lifestyles and actions, to tackle global environmental problems, this program was collectively put together by a body confronted with multiple common challenges attributed to unfriendly practices. It was designed to emphasise that if not addressed, the environmental issues may lead to natural disasters”, the statement said.

Noting that young people constitute a large part of the world’s population, the release pointed out the need for students to inculcate good habits and imbibe a culture of responsibility towards the environment.

The quiz competition drew students from various schools around LASU/Ojo and its environs and produced four winners – Omijie Happiness, Azurundu Munachi Bridget and Okafor Divine of Iba Housing Estate as well as Esther Ayomide of Army Cantonment Girls school.

The winners received gifts and cash prices while other participants were also rewarded with eco-friendly products such as reusable bags, multiple-use bottles, plant seedlings and degradable refuse bags.
