The Lagos State government has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing the state’s sports infrastructure. Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), made this commitment while speaking with journalists on Sunday in Lagos.
He highlighted Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s passion for sports and his commitment to ensuring that facilities meet high standards.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu is a sports lover committed to ensuring that facilities are completed and of the right standards,” Fatodu said.
Fatodu revealed that the state government is currently reviewing two major proposals for new sporting facilities. These proposals include initiatives aimed at grassroots sports development. “There are two major proposals with the governor now, waiting for his approval. Some of the proposals have to do with grassroots sports development,” he noted.
**Focus on Grassroots Sports Development**
To foster effective grassroots sports development, Fatodu emphasized the importance of considering the unique needs of various communities. “When we are talking about grassroots development of sports, we don’t want to limit it to a situation whereby athletes will have to come to Surulere or Teslim to achieve their sporting aspiration,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has invested significantly in constructing mini stadia in various communities. Fatodu assured that efforts are being made to expedite the construction process.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has actually invested much in making sure that mini stadia are built in various communities, and they are coming up. We are actually putting fire in the feet of the contractors to speed up work,” he added.
Upcoming Facilities and Events
Fatodu also mentioned upcoming events and facilities, including the mini stadium at Igbogbo Ikorodu, which is nearing completion. “The mini stadium at Igbogbo-Ikorodu is the one everyone keeps talking about, but another one is coming up towards Lekki, Epe. We have some strong interest in where we should situate the mini stadium, either in a certain constituency or another constituency. However, there is now an agreement between the parties and very soon, the place will be open for use in that area,” he said.
In addition to the facilities, the Lagos State Sports Commission is planning events such as the Ibile Games and Lagos Town Racing, tailored to grassroots and community sports development. “Very soon, Ibile games will be coming, Lagos town racing will be coming and many more that are more tailored to the grassroots and various communities in Lagos state,” Fatodu concluded.
