The Lagos State Government has apprehended 94 individuals suspected of illegal activities along the rail-line corridor stretching from Pen-Cinema to Fagba Junction.
The arrests were made during a midnight raid conducted in response to ongoing complaints from residents, commuters, and concerned citizens about criminal activities and illegal structures along the rail tracks.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrests on Wednesday via a post on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter).
He explained, “In response to complaints from residents, commuters, and concerned citizens on the nefarious activities of illegal squatters, miscreants, and suspected criminal elements along rail-track corridors, the agency undertook a midnight raid along the rail-track between Pen-Cinema under the bridge up to Fagba Junction.”
Wahab stated that the operation, which started around 2:30 am, spanned over five kilometers. “The thorough operation commenced at about 0230hrs, covering over five kilometres in distance; shanties and illegal structures were removed,” he added.
The raid led to the arrest of 94 suspects, and officials also recovered a locally fabricated short gun, multiple wraps of a substance believed to be Indian hemp, charms, and a jackknife. “The suspects will be charged to court accordingly,” Wahab affirmed.
Wahab further emphasized that the crackdown on miscreants forms part of an ongoing state initiative to uphold law, order, and environmental cleanliness in Lagos.
He reminded residents of the state’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental nuisance, stressing that the government remains committed to maintaining a cleaner and safer Lagos.
In April, Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to its zero-tolerance policy on environmental nuisances, vowing that the state would not yield to any distraction, blackmail, or propaganda in pursuing a cleaner Lagos agenda.
