The Lagos State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke has called on Chairmen of Local Governments, Local Council Development Areas and other stakeholders in the environment sector to embrace the waste-to-wealth policy of the State government in order to maximise resources.

She made the call during the inspection of drainage channels at Surulere Local Government and Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Areas of the State, saying that the present administration is keen on ensuring that the “Waste-to-Wealth”
policy remains relevant and, therefore, should be adopted and replicated at the local government level.

Arobieke explained that the ongoing inspection exercise of wastewater channels in all the LGs and LCDAs is part of efforts to prevent flooding and improve the flow of wastewater in drainage channels across the State.

According to her “One of the adverse effects of climate change is the incessant and heavy rainfall being witnessed in the State. As such, there is a need for a proactive approach to tackling drainage challenges in Lagos State”.

While imploring the Heads of Sanitation Unit at Surulere LGA and Coker-Aguda LCDA to concentrate on problem areas in the communities and endeavour to inform the State government of the required support, the Commissioner commended the
Chairman, Surulere Local Government, Mr. Tajudeen Ajide for tarring Olufemi Street up to Adebisi Close to eradicate the problem of stagnant water within the axis.

Some of the drainage channels inspected were on Olufemi Street; Ajao Road; Adebisi Close; Atara Street, Savage Street and Okamba Close; Nuru Oniwu; Rosanwo Street and Ritalori Secondary Collectors at Surulere Local Government Area and Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Areas.
