The Kwara State Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation into the death of Qoyum Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, who was allegedly killed on September 4, 2024, in the Sango area of the state capital.
Ishola’s death has sparked outrage among his fellow students, with accusations surfacing that he was killed by a police officer. Responding to these claims, the Kwara State Police Command, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, on Sunday, assured the public and the family of the deceased that justice would be pursued.
“We stand with the family in this difficult time and are committed to seeking justice for the deceased,” Ejire-Adeyemi said. She added that a comprehensive investigation had already commenced, with all key actors and witnesses identified. “The Kwara State Police Command is fully dedicated to uncovering the truth and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable according to the law.”
The Police Command further emphasized its commitment to transparency and diligence, noting the importance of providing clear and honest answers to both the family and the community. “We are conducting the investigation with the utmost integrity, leaving no room for doubt or compromise,” the statement read.
In a bid to maintain public order, the Police Command also called on the public and the student community to remain calm and patient while the investigation unfolds. “We understand emotions are high, but we urge everyone to avoid actions that could disrupt public order or interfere with the investigation. The Kwara State Police Command promises to keep the public informed of any new developments,” Ejire-Adeyemi added.
Meanwhile, the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Engr. Abdul Muhammed, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic loss of Abdulqoyyum Ishola, a National Diploma (ND 2) student in Electrical Electronic Engineering. In a statement signed by the Polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Halimat Garba, the Rector described the circumstances surrounding Ishola’s death as unclear, noting that several conflicting accounts have emerged.
“The situation surrounding the death of this young and promising student is still uncertain, with many unverified stories in circulation,” Muhammed said. He reassured the public that the institution’s management is committed to ensuring justice is served once the investigation is concluded.
Muhammed also commended the students for their restraint, appreciating their decision not to take the law into their own hands. “We are grateful for the calm and patience displayed by our students. As the investigation progresses, the Polytechnic community remains steadfast in its call for accountability and justice for Abdulqoyyum,” he stated.
