Kano, Nigeria – In a move to reinstate the traditional authority of the Emir of Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has ordered the five emirs appointed by his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, to vacate their palaces within 48 hours.
The affected emirs were appointed by Ganduje in 2019, when he split the Kano emirate into five and created new emirates in Karaye, Gaya, Bichi, and Rano.
However, the Kano House of Assembly, controlled by the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), recently repealed the law that enabled Ganduje to make the changes.
On Thursday evening, Governor Yusuf signed the bill into law, effectively reinstating Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the sole Emir of Kano.
During a media briefing, the governor directed the sacked monarchs to hand over official residences and palaces to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs within two days.
This move marks a significant development in the ongoing power struggle between the Kano State government and the traditional institutions. The reinstatement of Emir Sanusi is seen as a major victory for the NNPP and a blow to Ganduje’s legacy.
The affected emirs have been ordered to comply with the governor’s directive and vacate their palaces by the end of the 48-hour ultimatum. The development is being closely watched by political analysts and traditional institution stakeholders across the country.
