An Upper Shari’a Court in Kofar Kudu, Kano State, has acquitted the Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Danladi Sankara, of allegations of adultery made against him by one Nasiru Buba.
Buba had accused Sankara of engaging in an illicit affair with his wife, Tasleem Baba Nabegu, leading to Sankara’s arrest by operatives of the Kano State Hisbah Board. He was reportedly apprehended in the company of Tasleem at one of his properties in Kano.
Delivering the judgment, the presiding judge, Ibrahim Sarki Yola, ruled that there was no evidence to substantiate the claims against Sankara. He based his decision on a report from the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police.
“Following the investigation by the police, the report shows there is no evidence to prove that there was any illicit affair between Auwal Danladi Sankara and Tasleem Baba Nabegu,” Justice Yola declared.
The court also pointed out the absence of the complainant, Nasiru Buba, and his legal team during the proceedings. “Since the complainant and his lawyers are not present to challenge the submission by the police, I have no choice but to strike out the case,” the judge added.
Sankara’s counsel, Barrister Sadam Suleiman, expressed relief at the judgment, emphasizing the vindication of his client. “We have always maintained that our client is innocent. The court has affirmed this by clearing his name based on the police investigation,” Suleiman remarked.
Similarly, Rabiu Shu’aibu, who represented Tasleem Baba Nabegu, hinted at potential legal repercussions for Buba. “We will discuss with our client to explore the possibility of filing a case against Nasiru Buba, as he has defamed her name,” Shu’aibu stated.
In his closing remarks, Justice Yola emphasized the importance of thorough investigations in sensitive cases, particularly those involving prominent figures.
He urged law enforcement agencies, including the Hisbah Board, to exercise caution in handling such matters.
